The Internet provides a way of naming all the computers on the Internet, and the files they store.
The Internet domain name system provides one or more names for each computer on the Internet. Names are organized into a tree structure as follows:
Files on a computer system are stored in a directory tree. Files are referred to by specifying the path from the root of the tree to the file.
By specifying both a domain name and a directory tree path, a particular file on the Internet may be identified. Here are some examples:
