Archie is a service that finds files that have been made available on the world's FTP servers. The archie service is provided by a hundred or so archie server machines scattered throughout the Internet. Each month or so the servers scan the world's FTP archives making a note of the names (and dates, sizes etc) of the files available. The servers then construct an index of all the files for users to consult.
To use Archie, you need to obtain an Archie Client program such as Anarchie for the Macintosh. You can then type in a filename pattern and the archie service will provide a list of FTP addresses of files whose name matches the pattern.
Usage: Archie is, to my knowledge, not as widely used
as the other Internet services, but is extremely useful to anyone
looking for specific program of file.
