The Internet's worldwide TCP/IP data transport provides the foundation for the wide range of higher-level services that users like you actually see. One of the reasons that the Internet can be confusing to newcomes is because it offers so many different services. As a result, people frequently confuse the Internet as a whole with one or more of its services. For example, someone might ask you for your "Internet Address". This could mean several things, but in practice the person probably is asking for your email address or web address.

All this confusion can be avoided simply by realizing that the Internet consists of a TCP/IP packet transport upon which are built a range of services. How you interact with the Internet depends on which service you're using. Here is a list of some of the most popular services.
