The Internet consists of a collection of networks that have been connected together to form one gigantic network.
Each network in the Internet consists of a collection of computers that have been connected together in an internal network. The computers in this network that communicate with computers from other networks are called gateways.
All this structure is used to create the following virtual structure which enables every computer and every user to view the Internet as a homogeneous transport that can enable them to communicate with any other computer on the Internet.
