WebHints: Surfing: Bad Server Errors

If you type in a URL (or follow a link) and encounter an error message such as:

   Error

The requested item could not be loaded by the proxy.

Netscape Proxy was unable to locate the server: www.ksd.sdfg.
The server does not have a DNS entry. Check that the server
name in the Location field (URL) is correctly spelled and try
       again.

Proxy server at wwwproxy.on.net.au on port 8080

it usually means that the server name in the URL was incorrect. This happens quite often when someone gives you their web URL and you type it into your browser (e.g. Netscape Navigator). Here's some things to do:

Check the spelling: Check the spelling of the name very carefully. In particular, look for commas instead of dots (e.g. http://www.ross,net/) and slashes in the wrong place (e.g. http://www.ross/net/).

Try prepending a www: Sometimes people forget the www at the start of their address. So if someone gives you http://ross.net/ and it doesn't work, try http://www.ross.net/

Try appending the country code: Sometimes people will accidentally omit the country code on the end of their server name. So they give you http://www.adelaide.edu instead of http://www.adelaide.edu.au. So if a server name is bad try appending the code of the country it's in.
